COMMISSIONING A PET PORTRAIT

Pippa works from photographs, for the majority of her portraits. These photographs are provided by the client. However, not everyone is a natural born photographer, so if you need some guidance please request Pippa's information sheet on 'how to take a good photograph' or please feel free to call and ask. Also, if you live locally to Pippa, she can always come and take photos for you, however, there would be a charge for this.

MATERIALS USED

Pet portraits on canvas are produced using top quality oil paints on best quality triple primed canvas on wooden stretchers, with a depth of 2cm. These can then be hung on your wall with or without a frame. Pippa can also paint you pet portrait on a deeper box canvas which has a depth of 3.5cm, if you definitely don't require it framing ( there is a small extra charge for this type of canvas ). Pet portraits produced in watercolour are painted on 100% cotton, acid free, 300 g/m2, High White paper. This ensure clarity and vibrancy of the watercolours and durability of the painting.

PRICE DIFFERENCE

The reason for the price difference between pet portraits painted in oil or watercolour is because it takes many more hours of work to produce a pet portrait in oil compared to one painted in watercolour. Pippa's oil paintings are built up in layers, each layer having to dry before a new layer is placed ion the top, the painting also has to be allowed to dry for at least a month once finished. Watercolour is water soluble and so dries in minutes, which allows layers to be built up very quickly and so the painting progresses much more quickly. With both mediums Pippa's technique creates a vibrant painting with a real depth of colour and the light.

Please note that all watercolours paintings will need framing. Pippa always makes sure her watercolours are sent to you with a mount surround, ready for framing.

SIZES

The painting sizes below are the usual ones requested. However, if you have a different size in mind, please contact Pippa for a no obligation quote.

INITIAL CONSULTATION

AT PRESENT PIPPA IS ONLY ABLE TO TAKE COMMISSIONS FROM CLIENTS WITHIN THE UK.

If you would like further information and helpful tips on how to take a good photograph, please e mail Pippa at info@pippashennan.com or call her her on 07813694556 and she will send you a copy of her helpful tips sheet.

Once you have decided to commission a portrait of your pet the next step is to send Pippa your photos (which can be sent via e mail, on a dvd or as photos, in the post) along with an outline of ideas about how you would like you pet portrayed. Pippa will then liaise with you to produce a number of digital images showing your pet portrayed with e.g different background colours or with different background scenes, so you can have a good idea about what the final painting would look like and decide which you prefer.

The final step once the details of the portrait have been agreed, is to begin the painting itself.

PAYMENT

An initial payment of 50% of the anticipated cost of the portrait is required. Once the painting is ready to be started, full payment becomes due.

An invoice will be e mailed to you from which you pay electronically with a credit or debit card. Otherwise, payment can be made by bank transfer. Personal cheques are also accepted, but work on your portrait will not commence until the cheque has cleared the bank, which may take up to five days.

FRAMING

All prices quoted are for unframed work. Watercolour paintings are mounted ready for framing and oil paintings are on canvas stretched over a wooden frame, so they can be hung without an external frame, if you desire. Good quality framing can be arranged, however, framing can be very personal and so it is often better for you to liaise with you local framer to ensure you are totally happy with the end result. Please note a frame ( particularly if glazed ) will also add to the weight of the painting, if you are having it posted.

POSTAGE

The cost of postage is extra. In order to ensure that paintings arrive quickly and safely Pippa sends the majority of her work via Parcel Force. Paintings are always very well packaged for posting, being sandwiched between hardboard and well wrapped in bubble wrap.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PIPPA ONLY DESPATCHES TO UK ADDRESSES.

Below are postage costs for unframed paintings to UK Mainland addresses, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Isles of Scilly. For Channel Islands please ask for a quote. Postage for framed work has to be priced individually, but it will usually cost approximately 10.00 more than the unframed price.

Paintings up to 30 x 40 cm 20.00
Paintings 30 x 40 cm - 50 x 60cm 30.00
Paintings over 50 x 60cm 40.00

If you are local to Pippa's studio, personal collection can also be arranged.

TIME SCALE

Depending on the complexity of the subject, oil paintings take between 6 - 8 weeks to complete and be dry enough to send. Watercolours take 2 - 3 weeks. However, at busy times such as Christmas, production times may be extended due to an increase in demand. So, to avoid disappointment, please allow plenty of time if you are having a portrait painted for a special occasion.

While Pippa will always try to accommodate an urgent request for a commission, this isn't always possible during very busy periods. So please try and give yourself plenty of time to avoid disappointment.

Another option, is to purchase one of Pippa's 'Commissioned Painting Gift Vouchers' which are a great idea if you are wanting to give a special gift but are short of time, or you feel the recipient would prefer to choose the subject themselves.
